5 Tips for Motivation for When You're Just Ready to Quit

Staying motivated day-in and day-out isn't easy. Even when we really want to be.

One of the best tips for motivation is learning to not sit around waiting for inspiration to hit. Inspiration certainly helps but isn't required.

Set short and long term goals that matter to you. Schedule and plan for how you will achieve them, including what to do when proceeding feels too difficult.

The next time you're feeling like you're just ready to quit, try these suggestions to find the motivation you need to move forward.

1. Fake It 'Til You Make It

Sometimes the hardest part about getting something done is getting started. When you're truly feeling unmotivated, concentrate on taking the first step. Such as getting dressed appropriately for the next task or gathering the tools you need to get the work done.

Set a timer for 10 minutes and promise yourself that you can quit when the timer goes off. Chances are likely you'll have found the momentum to continue on even after the bell chimes.

2. Look for Inspiration

No matter what you're trying to achieve, there are likely other people who have gone down the path you're on. Look for blogs, podcasts, books, and articles written by them for inspiration. Even success stories unrelated to what you're trying to find motivation for can spark your heart, body, and mind into action.

3. Keep Things In Perspective

Everyone has moments where they feel unmotivated or burned out. When it happens to you, don't dwell on it or feel bad about it. Accept that it's part of the process and work your way through it.

You may just need a break or need to spend some time doing something outside your normal routine. Take a look at how you have been eating, sleeping, and how much you've been working. Make adjustments where necessary.

4. Break Down Big Goals

Many of life's most important goals take months, even years, to accomplish. Those tasks can feel overwhelming when looked at as one big event, but oftentimes there are many small, individual steps that get you to the finish line. It is easy to get unmotivated or feel like your goals are out of reach.

When this happens, take some time out plot out the necessary steps to get you from where you are to the end. Set realistic steps that you can achieve and celebrate as you move forward.

5. Reach Out for Help

Sometimes a lack of motivation stems simply from not being sure what the next step is you should be taking. This can result in analysis paralysis, leaving you in a state where you can't make a decision.

When this happens, seek out a friend or colleague that has knowledge that can help you. If that doesn't help, look for a mentor who has experience creating, building or dealing with the problems you are facing.
