A Guide to Working Smart

Most people will tell you that success comes from one thing - loads and loads of hard work. While there is definitely some hard work and dedication involved, this statement isn't entirely accurate.

In fact, you can achieve just as much by working smart, rather than working hard. When you take a moment to step back and reflect on your methods, your productivity, and your work habits, you can learn how to become more efficient.

Being more efficient allows you to get more work done in a shorter period of time. This will leave your schedule open for other projects, taking time for self-care, etc.

I want to help. Keep reading for our guide on working smart to increase your productivity.

Create Productivity Goals

First, you need to give yourself a direction so you can work with intention. What are your primary goals? How can you break those down into smaller, more manageable goals?

I recommend giving yourself daily, weekly, monthly, and quarterly goals. These milestone goals will ultimately lead to your year-end goals. Write them down in a place where you will see them several times a day to keep yourself motivated and on task.

Get Organized

Staying organized at work is one of the best tips for productivity. If you're disorganized, it will take you longer to complete even the simplest of tasks.

You'll lose track of what you're doing, what you're supposed to do next, and where everything is. Keep your workspace physically and digitally organized to continue working smart and efficiently.

Manage Your Time

Proper time management is a vital component of smart working. Don't allow yourself to get sidetracked or zone out while you're supposed to be working. You'll end up spending too much time on a single task, which will affect your overall productivity rate.

I suggest taking short, scheduled breaks to keep your mind focused. For example, take 10-15 minutes of every hour to step back and refocus. This may sound like a lot of time but it will substantially improve your efficiency.

Limit Your Distractions

Finally, working smart requires focus. Aside from taking necessary breaks throughout the day, this also means limiting distractions. Whether you work at home or on-site, you may need to turn off your personal cell phone.

Smartphones are amazing, but they can be incredibly addicting and distracting. Don't allow yourself to get caught up reading emails, checking social media, looking at videos on YouTube, or reading the news.

Additionally, ensure you have a work environment that promotes productivity. If you work at home, you might need to set boundaries with your family or roommates to ensure you're not distracted during your work hours.
